Every presentation starts with the presenter talking about who they are and what they know. Fair enough we would like to know a little about you but not really! We are not interested at all in who you are and where you are from ONLY and ONLY if, it will help us alleviate our pain! Then what do most presenters do……run of and start talking about themselves! One tip to always remember,

IF THE AUDIENCE WAS NOT PRESENT, WOULD THEY MISS OUT ON ANYTHING YOU SAID?

if your talking about yourself 95% of the time, why do you really need the audience? So the main thing here is to address your audience greatest concern. Before you present try talking to your best candidate! This is the person who best represents your audience. What does he do, what does he eat, where does he shop, what makes them happy and most important what is his greatest concern! Write your presentation like you are talking to this person! This will by far have the greatest impact.

Second, leave your audience with something they can implement hopefully take them closer to a goal they want to achieve. Small talk is just that, small talk. The way of the Tao is to talk small and act way bigger. After introducing the big problem don’t just offer a remote solution that you read from a book, use the solution right infront of their eyes! Cartier ads were great back in the 70’s because unlike most ads they literally dipped their watches in water to show water resistance!

Talk only in terms of their pain and the way to truly know your audiences pain is to…..pre study or just simply ask during the presentation. Trust me there will be a 80/20 situation here. A majority of your audience will identify with a common dilemma that will have the greatest impact that you being the expert know exactly how to overcome it, otherwise you wouldn’t be the one presenting!

Finally reduce their internal resistance to take action. A good presenter inspires, a great presenter gets people taking action. The final question here is, do you want to be good or great?

Your Choice.
