The Coltrane Phenomenon Of Impact/Excellence.

Posted on: December 10, 2012

If you are a jazz enthusiast you definitely know of  John Coltrane the saxophonist. He is by far notably produced some of the most electrifying melodies with his sax! A little known fact though is that it took him almost 10 years to study his craft. He first mastered the art and got comfortable learning the principles then slowly started defying the rules by doing his own thing. Apparently his sax melodies felt like he was playing different instruments. He used his sax to explain his unconscious emotions and that sax made people cry when they felt the pain. One of his greatest performances was Giant Steps and this brings about a phenomenon that  one must follow to become the Master in his craft.

  1. Learn the principles. To become a crazy chemist, know your elements, a biologist, cells, a mechanic, the engine. You get the drift.
  2. Understand what to look for that is the signals that have the greatest impact. The details. Example. If you see nimbus clouds, you know to expect precipitation in the form of sleet, hail or snow.
  3. Break the rules within the principles. Don’t care about the masses, care about communicating the most intimate emotion through your work. It negates fame,it negates status and that’s why most of the people that are masters received recognition after they died because their visions were way beyond their time. It is called impact.
  4. Let it go. After you release the art, let it go! Don’t worry about who will buy or what it will do or what will people think! Release it and like a bad break up, walk away!
