Prescribing Before Diagnosing?

Posted on: August 31, 2011

Imagine you are sick beyond Tylenol or Benadryl. You are experiencing a splitting headache, vomiting, mucus running down your nose and sweating profusely. You decide against all odds you will go and consult a doctor! Upon bypassing the administration assistant, who pounds you about your insurance card you finally get this opportunity to consult the professional!

Then something amazing happens. You find the doctor with a stack of prescriptions written out and he hands you one and tells you to go to the pharmacy and get your medication. You check the prescription and on it, there is a terrible hand written note to the pharmacist prescribing Amoxicillin. From your drug knowledge, you know that he has just prescribed an antibiotic BUT what puzzles you is that he didn’t evaluate you or even ask what you were suffering from?

Would trust a doctor who is prescribing before diagnosing? I surely hope not. I remember in high school we had a matron who prescribed a Piriton(Chlorphenamine, a antihistamine) for each and every situation that we had. His argument was that whatever we suffered from, if we could swallow drowsy medication, it would put as to sleep and that way we wouldn’t “suffer” from the symptom. When you try and sell information without analyzing your market, this is exactly what you are doing. Until you seek to understand, you have no right to prescribe. In relationships, how can you demand one to behave in a certain fashion without first comprehending who he or she is?

Understand to be understood, diagnose to prescribe.
