The Entity That Lost Everything By Doing Everything

Posted on: May 24, 2011

Business was good, really good. Jimmy and Joey had made tremendous improvements 5 years from when they had started. A small hardware store that specialized in nothing but wood and i mean they had all kinds of wood! From oak wood to cedar to mahogany you name it, they had it and they were making decent income from supplying to all contractors in a small town in rural Washington. Then logic, told them maybe they should expand and venture in to the restaurant business as they thought, people coming to buy wood would sure be hungry and would definately want something to eat.

It so happened this was the beginning of the end of their business. The adrenaline didn’t stop there. Crystal ball after crystal ball was telling them that they should venture in to X or Y and they failed miserably. They failed so miserably their wives left them! They were now taking money from their “winner”(the hardware store) and investing it on crystal ball insight. Soon their only winner felt jealous and neglected and had to grant freedom to her owners! Customers came in and at times even lacked the most basic commodity they were supposed to be selling, wood!

Jimmy and Joey were now feeding of each others ego. Despite continuous requests from their most loyal caring customers, they refused to listen.

Lessons.

  1. When you find a winner, ride it till the wheels fall off!
  2. Don’t rub crystal balls for insight. In other words don’t decide “The prospect would want……”
  3. Test everything
  4. Listen to your customers
  5. Focus on one thing at a time.
  6. No business should take precedence over your family.
  7. Be grateful for what you have right now!
