Labor Day Special…..

Posted on: September 6, 2010

Yes what a holiday….did you say holiday?

A poll shows that close to one in four people are out of “labor”! If i have that right that’s about 40% of the total population in the United States! I’m not sure that the unemployment is that high though i do know that it is more than 10% which is the said national average!

What exactly does labor mean? Being told what to do? Being instructed as to what to do?In today’s Seth Godin post ,

he talks about the need for meaningful relevant important work. The need to use your resources to do work where you can see the immediate or long term benefit! Yet the greatest change in labor is that the job descriptions are changing!  If you can do your job with a hangover, or without putting too much thought or even without care….then it’s not about hours anymore! It’s not about making a paycheck….you can and will be eventually replaced! That is where branding comes in! A brand is hard to replace! A brand does not just do work…a brand creates meaningful work and even more important delivers outcomes! A brand gets paid handsomely or beautifully depending on how you view it but always as a result of the work involved! Today one of the reasons for such high numbers in unemployment is that people are tired of being robots! A robot is anyone that can not use his ingenuity to solve a problem and relies heavily on input from his superiors!Today more people are opting for happiness in what they do rather than just being a robot to a job! More people are starting businesses today more than ever before! There are some jobs that are vacant despite the high unemployment rates and yet these jobs claim that they can not find good talent! Really? In a country where unemployment is at an all time high?

The reality is that people are tired and exhausted of working at the same place for twenty years and then get laid off like it didn’t matter and we have become smarter! Smarter in the sense that we shall no longer just work blindly! We shall starting laying foundations that their destiny’s are controlled by us! Our income too! We shall no longer be robots! Besides we do most of the work so why is it that we are the victims here with the least compensation?

On this labor day, despite having the grill on full throttle, reflect on what labor means to you! How do you intend to create labor? How do you intend to impact someone through your “labor?” What outcome can you deliver and who are you as an individual? Think reflect and be hopeful!
